Dear Producer (Morning Show) I have listened to part of this morning's presentation on-line concerning the 4.5billion cedi items purchased for the comfort of the immediate past speaker of Ghana's parliament which he wants to take home as a "Thank You" present from the Ghanaian Taxpayer. I also listened to the story of non-payment of salaries of some workers in Ghana. I'm in Copenhagen Denmark and listened to the programme with my host family who have visited Ghana several times and known much about Ghana's economic problems. The lady of the house, on hearing the news, gasped and ran into the toilet and threw up violently!!! We have to suspend listening to the rest of the story to attend to her. Reasons for her the act: She was appauled at Ghanaians and simply couldn't understand that a third-world country which Denmark supports in many ways and trying to assist to have a headway in its developments effort could afford to spend that much money on one individual while their own country's Prime Minister and all Ministers of state live in their own houses and don't have any such support from the state. What annoyed the family most was that two years ago, when they visited me in Ghana a lady relative of mine came to me in tears to narrate her story of no-payment of her salary after she had been employed a pupil-teacher and had been working for more that two years just like the nurse in your programme. Out of pity they gave this relative of mine US$200 for support. The country called Denmark is one that all aspiring politicians and leaders in Africa must visit and learn about what it is to be a leader in all aspects of governing and leadership. Ministers and Directors of companies ride bicycle to parliament and to their various places of work. My host family shares a block with the the Minister of Finance and every morning you see him on his bicycle going to work. In a chat with him he says that by law he can only be chauffeur-driven when he is on a national assignment and this begins when he reports at the office. As soon as he closes from work, his driver parks the official car and he is under no obligation to drive he the minister home. Either he drives his own car home or he jumps on his bicycle no matter the hour of the day or the weather. I write this message for Myjoyonline as a kind of apology to my host and for the shame I feel as a Ghanaian listening to the greed of our leaders and insensitivity to their fellow country men. Meanwhile the rest of us who should take such matters seriously look on sycophantically or defend these unreasonable or unthinkable consumption of our leaders in the usual way "As a minister, As a manager, As an MP, As a President... you must have this or that you must have a car or fully furnished house" Who decides these things? Who says that the state should provide certain category of its citizens such things as house, cars etc while others must save money to provide them themselves? These morning's two incidences of unbriddled expenditure on the immediate past Speaker of parliament who won't be satisfied with enjoying these facitilities at state expense but must misappropriate it after serving his office follows and the no-payment of newly employed nurse in the wake of gratuity for the President was too much for my hosts to take. The little respect they had for me evaporated. They saw me and the likes from Africa as representing a species of homo sapien still living in feudal times and use the suits and other forms of material goods to hide our inferiority. Other than that, they asked, why must a retired president demand six cars and two houses etc etc as a gratuity? This kind of greed and mad consumption from our leaders MUST STOP!!!! It is madness and never unthinkable in the computer age that two years must elapse before slaries are processed. Who will believe this story, even if it is ponly one person working in the office? And amidst these chaos our leaders want to equate themselves with leaders of the developed world in their material consumption. It is only in Africa, the continent that is lagging behind, the continent that never thinks, that we hear of these things. I am ashamed to be an African hearing these type of greed being spoken of about our leaders. Dr. Kwesi Tefe PS. I tried to telephone the studio but the numbers provided on your website couldn't connect. Please read this message to the public as a wake up call, say it to the hearing of people like Kwesi Pratt and others to come out and condemn these obscenity of material consumerism. I respect that gentleman whatever is said about him by other people.
